Sustainability: This is how green we are
Sustainable Holiday
Sustainability is part of our life; it is inseparably integrated into our lifestyle. Which is why HYGGE HAUS is also completely focussed on ecology and resource conservation. It starts with environmentally friendly building materials, continues with local craftsmen who have supported us and ends with green furnishings. This is what makes sustainable holidays possible.
Clay Plaster, Eco Paints & Natural Materials
In keeping with old building methods, we have used clay plaster throughout most of the house: This makes for a beautiful, healthy indoor climate and pays tribute to a traditional craft. To allow the clay to continue to breathe, we used high-quality eco-paint , some of which we refined with turmeric, beetroot, and carrot juice to attain the perfect hues.
We used 14 cm thick hemp boards to insulate the roof trusses, and there is a thin layer of cork under the parquet flooring in the bedroom instead of Styrofoam as impact sound insulation.
Second Chance
We found some of our high-quality furniture at flea markets or received them as gifts from family. The old Singer sewing machine table, for example, is looking forward to its second chance in the reading corner and the old wooden bed, which has changed hands several times, gives the cosy bedroom a sublime shine. The wall tiles in the guest bathroom date back to the GDR era – we discovered them in the barn and decided to give the out-of-fashion pieces a new lease on life. We also had the bathroom doors, which had been shipped to the barn and forgotten, refurbished in a small wood workshop.
Salvage What You Can
The keen eye will discover a few creatively repurposed objects in the flat that we saved from certain death. The beautiful wardrobe, for example, used to be a wooden staircase – this side panel is actually called a stringer. It had lain lonely and abandoned in our barn. Lovingly refurbished and fitted with a few old metal elements, it now faithfully serves as a wardrobe and is a delight for the eye.
The old chains on which the living room lamps hang used to be part of horse harnesses.
Almost Plastic-free
As we do in our own home, we have also tried to do without plastic in HYGGE HAUS. Instead of a plastic coffee machine, you will find a high-quality stainless steel French press. The toaster and kettle are very low in plastic (plastic-free is not yet available on the market). Instead of Tupperware, there are glass containers with bamboo lids in the kitchen. The garden furniture is made of FSC-certified wood.
Sustainable Dog Accessories
High-quality, ecological dog accessories await your four-legged friend: organic cotton towels, enamel bowls in hand-forged dog bars, compostable poop bags and sustainable sleeping accommodations. And if you’re in the mood for more – our UNIQUE DOG country shop is just around the corner waiting to be visited.
